Czech Ball Hockey Celebrates Gold and Silver in Poprad! Junior Women Conquer the World, Junior Men Fall in Overtime

The Czech U20 national teams showcased their strength at the Junior World Ball Hockey Championships in Poprad, Slovakia. While the Czech junior women stormed through the tournament with just one loss and convincingly defeated Canada in the final, the men’s team staged an incredible comeback.

Junior Women Find the Key to Beating Canada and Celebrate World Gold

The tournament started with a 0–2 loss to Canada, but the Czech junior women bounced back the next day with a dominant 17–0 win over Great Britain. They followed up with a clear victory over the USA and then avenged their earlier group-stage loss by beating Slovakia in the semifinal. The final against Canada turned into a Czech showcase. Goals by Kotyrová, Zavoralová, Kantorová, and Štěrbová paved the way for a commanding 5–1 win and sparked well-deserved gold medal celebrations. "We knew exactly how we wanted to play, and the girls followed the instructions to perfection. They worked hard, and we’re proud of them," praised head coach Jaromír Kotlík after the final.

Junior Men Achieve the Impossible, But Gold Slips Away in Overtime

The U20 men’s team opened the tournament with a win over Switzerland, lost to Canada in overtime, and then defeated both the USA and Slovakia. In the semifinals, they once again edged out the Americans, setting up a rematch with Canada in the final. The game got off to a rough start – Canada led 4–0 by the 8th minute. But the Czechs launched an incredible comeback. From trailing 1–4 and later 3–7, they managed to tie the game 7–7 in the closing minutes and force overtime. However, the Canadian forward ended the game just seven seconds into extra time. "It was a performance worthy of recognition. Before the third period, we said in the locker room that we would try everything. The players gave it their all. It’s a huge disappointment, but also a source of immense pride," said coach Jaroslav Pavlík after the game.

Two Medals as a Reward for Team Spirit and Commitment

Both Czech teams not only delivered strong performances but also displayed remarkable team spirit. Every player proved that the Czech Republic belongs among the ball hockey powerhouses. The gold and silver medals are further evidence of the outstanding work done by the national teams and the clubs that develop these talented athletes. "The results from Poprad are the outcome of long-term, systematic efforts by the national program and clubs that focus on youth development. Both teams showed character, unity, and the ability to respond to adversity. The junior women’s gold and junior men’s silver are a tremendous success for Czech ball hockey," stated Milan Maršner, head of the national teams department at ČMSHb.
